“Pig Beach” has gained popularity with social media posts ramping up. Who wouldn’t want to be greeted by jolly, snorting pigs while on vacation?
Here are some tips on how to plan this escapade and best practices to enjoy your trip.
Where exactly are the swimming pigs?
Big Major Cay is home to over 40 swimming pigs in the Bahamas. It’s located in the Exuma, which is a district of the Bahamas. It’s one of over 365 islands and is also known as “Pig Beach”
How do I get there?
The only way to get to the beach is by boat. You can either take a guided tour or charter your own.
Exumavacation.com offers boat rentals for as little as $250 for a full day. But if you wanted to do a guided tour, one we recommend is 4C’s Adventures which offers a full-day tour package. Not only do you get to see the pigs, you get to snorkel, hang out with iguanas, and swim with nurse sharks.
Pigs obviously love food – can I feed them?
Yes – currently you still can. Although the minister of agriculture and marine resources stated that rules will be put in place as they believe some of the recent deaths were because of tourists not following the rules.
It is recommended to feed them while in the water as sand ingestion has been a problem for the pigs and has contributed to some deaths.
If these pigs can spend all day swimming and living like kings – we think you should be able to as well. Get off your ass book your trip to the Bahamas now.
