Puppet Theatre in Tbilisi, Georgia. 100% Rotten Tomatoes (locals would say)

puppet show georgia

Remember the ending scene in Forgetting Sarah Marshall when Jason Segal finally performs his puppet masterpiece? The climax of it was pretty funny and I remember thinking, “What the hell just happened?” Well, you can see your very own puppet show in Tbilisi, Georgia.

The Rezo Gabriadze Puppet Theater is famous in Georgia. It’s named after Revaz “Rezo” Levanovich Gabriadze who’s a  film director, playwright, writer, painter and sculptor. He has written over 35 screenplays and turned to puppet theatre as an overlooked way to tell his dramatic stories.

Rezo decorated the tower with hundreds of tiles which he designed himself and it instantly became a major architectural attraction of Tbilisi. People often call it the ‘Tower with Clock’ or ‘The Tower with Angel’.

Though modest in size, The Gabriadze Theater is among the world’s preeminent cultural institutions. Presenting mature puppet performances full of depth and meaning, it has gained the respect and recognition of international audiences and critics alike.

Check out a video below. We sent Rezo one of our Dr. Yessir Monkey prints to see if he can get our smart Orangutan’s to become famous actors. Great effort by us.

“But my dream came true. I went back to painting and sculpture, and this time forever. I am grateful to my fate, to the puppets, and my small troupe, rustling softly in dark corners of this old building.” –Rezo Gabriadze
